Sandakan is a port town in the Malaysian state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo. It is the capital of the Sandakan District. The town is located about 1,500 km northeast of the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur.
The town has a population of about 78,000 and is the second largest town in Sabah after Kota Kinabalu. Sandakan is also the main gateway to the Kinabatangan River, which is the longest river in Sabah.
