The Indonesian currency is called the rupiah. It is divided into 100 sen, although coins are no longer in circulation. Banknotes are issued in denominations of 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 50,000 and 100,000 rupiah.
The rupiah has been in use since 1946, when it replaced the Dutch East Indies guilder. It was initially pegged to the US dollar, but since the Asian financial crisis of 1998, has been allowed to float freely.
