A regency is a type of administrative division in Indonesia. It is the second-level subdivision of provinces, after provinces themselves. Regencies are divided into districts, which are the third-level administrative divisions of Indonesia.
The word “regency” is derived from the Dutch word “regent” (meaning “ruler” or “governor”).
Regencies in Indonesia are not to be confused with regencies in the United States. Unlike in the United States, regencies in Indonesia are not constitutional entities, but merely administrative divisions.
