There are more than 17,000 islands in Indonesia, of which around 6,000 are inhabited. The most populous island is Java, home to over 145 million people. Other major islands include Sumatra, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua.
The Indonesian government has stated its intention to develop more of the islands in the country’s outer regions, in order to spur economic growth. This is in line with the government’s ambitious “Master Plan for the Development of Outer Islands” launched in 2014.
