On October 29, 2018, a Boeing 737 MAX 8 airplane operated by Lion Air crashed into the Java Sea less than fifteen minutes after takeoff from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta, Indonesia. All 189 passengers and crew onboard were killed in the crash.
