Since the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815, Indonesia has been one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world. A series of earthquakes in Sulawesi in September 2018 killed more than 2,000 people and left thousands more homeless. In the aftermath of the disaster, international donors pledged more than $1.5 billion in aid.
The United States was the largest donor, pledging more than $530 million. Other top donors included Japan, China, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
